SACBC’s Deepest Sympathies to all Fire and Flood Victims
The bishops of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference offer their deepest sympathy and condolences to family members and friends of those who have recently lost loved ones due to the inclement weather in the Western Cape and the ravaging fires in the Southern and Eastern Cape.
For some months now we have been praying for rain in the Western Cape and we are grateful to God that at last some relief has been given to this drought-stricken area. The violence of the storm of last week, however, resulted in the loss of life and the displacement of people. While continuing to pray for rain in the area, we humbly request the Lord to save us from floods and other devastation.
We salute and congratulate firefighters and other emergency personnel who regularly risk their own lives in order to preserve the lives and properties of others. We are deeply indebted to you.
We are also grateful to all those who have responded so generously by making donations to bring relief to those who have been displaced and left homeless. We call on all South Africans to continue making donations in order to help those affected to rebuild their lives. The Church, through her different agencies, will also play her part in offering whatever assistance we can, and to this end the Bishops’ Conference has made some funds available to the affected areas.
