Fr Stuart Bate OMI Rest in Peace
St Joseph’s Theological Institute: It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Fr Stuart Bate OMI. Professor Bate had dedicated his life to service of the church as a pastor, and an educator. Some of his pastoral ministries included serving at St Therese in Inchanga and as Provincial of the then OMI Natal Province of the OMIs. He spent many years in academic service at St Augustine College in Johannesburg and St Joseph’s Theological Institute where he retired in 2021, and for many years worked as an emeritus professor at UKZN.
His domain in theology was Missiology. He had a keen interest in healing about which he wrote many articles. He also pursued academic interests in African theology and Inculturation. He wrote a number of books including “Serving Humanity” in 1996, “Inculturation and Healing” in 1995, “Human Life is Cultural” in 2002, “Understanding Human Society” in 2003, and “Responsibility in a time of AIDS” in 2003, “A Story Worth Telling” in 2013, “Catholic Responses to Aids in Southern Africa” in 2014, among others.
Fr Bate will be remembered as a dedicated oblate, priest and missionary. He had a deep love for the Church and for academics. He shared a vision that theology has a special place in the development of society and the multiple levels of human relationships. He will be missed as a mentor, a guide, a father, and a sarcastic academic who despite his pride in his work had a humble and simple demeanour.
May he rest in God’s eternal peace
