Money vs Meaning: Is Chasing Wealth Leaving You Empty?
By Dr John Nyamunda – Big Picture: The Allure of Wealth – You are likely familiar with the verse, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36). However, how often do you think an overflowing bank account is a ticket to happiness? But will more money truly bring you fulfilment? Let’s consider the life of Blessed Benedict Daswa compared to some of South Africa’s wealthiest individuals.
Why should You Care: The Things Money can Buy
If you’re not clear about the role money plays in your life, you will make decisions that lead to a meaningless existence. As St. Francis of Assisi wisely said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” How much do you know about our own Blessed Benedict Daswa?
A Tale of Icons
Blessed Benedict Daswa, our own South African martyr, strived to lead an exemplary life as a teacher and principal in the Diocese of Tzaneen, Limpopo. He was murdered for publicly refusing to contribute for a Sangoma to come find a witch “who was causing lightning strikes in the area”.
They ambushed him with stones and sticks, on his way from dropping off passengers. When the mob finally caught up with him, after fleeing the ambush, his dying words were “God receive my spirit”. We remember his dedication to his community and faith. On the flip side, many are the stories of wealthy people whose lives, despite all the material riches, are marred by personal tragedies. They live pointless, faithless, and unhappy lives, How can you lead a life filled with faith and purpose?
Steps for a Purposeful, Faith-filled Life
- Take Small Steps to Align with Your Purpose: If your gift is teaching, why not start small by tutoring one underprivileged child? This small action can create a significant impact over time. Like St Francis of Assisi said, “Start by doing what is necessary; then do what is possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
- Money Should Be an Enabler, Not the End Goal: Money is a tool to help you achieve your purpose, not the purpose itself. Consider a manager focused on productivity but never fully present for his family—the very people who truly care about him. Pope Francis says, “Money must serve, not rule”.
Your Purpose, Your Legacy
To live a fulfilling life, you need to discover your purpose and pursue it. Remember, it’s not about you, but the difference you can make with your talents in the lives of others. “The future starts today, not tomorrow” (St John Paul II), so, what steps will you take today, tomorrow and this week to live a purposeful, faith-filled life?
