Brother Evaristus Sekhonyana Rest in Peace

Brother Evaristus Sekhonyana
By Bokang Tsoanamatsie – St Augustine Major Seminary and the Diocese of Qacha’s Nek held a requiem Mass to bid farewell to Brother Evaristus Kabelo Sekhonyana at Our Lady of Hermitage in Qacha’s Nek on February 21. The Mass was officiated by Bishop Augustine Bane OMI, the Bishop of Leribe, and co-celebrated by Bishop John Joale Tlhomola SCP, the Bishop of Mohale’s Hoek, along with Bishop Mopeli Joseph Sephamola OMI, the Bishop of Qacha’s Nek. The service was attended by priests, religious sisters, seminarians, and the faithful.
Brother Evaristus Kabelo Sekhonyana was born on January 4, 1997, at Mount Moorosi St Matthew’s Parish. He passed away unexpectedly on February 1, 2025, while in his final year at the seminary. He was remembered for his loving nature, humble demeanour, meticulousness, and a slight stutter that added to his charm, alongside his perfectionism and steadfast commitment to his faith. He was laid to rest in the priests’ cemetery of the Qacha’s Nek diocese at Hermitage Cathedral.
In his homily, Bishop Bane OMI reflected on the call received through baptism, urging the congregation to recognise the purpose of their calling. He emphasised the importance of striving to fulfil this divine purpose. Bishop Bane encouraged Christians to remain hopeful and prepared to respond to the Lord’s call, asserting that as pilgrims of hope, they should maintain their faith, as it is through hope that they will find success and redemption. He expressed sorrow over the loss of Brother Sekhonyana, noting the high expectations held for him, and urged his fellow seminarians to pray for him, that he may continue to serve the Lord even in heaven.
