Dominican Vice Province of Southern Africa Annual Study Days Conference

By Brother Prince Ncube OP – The Dominican Vice Province of Southern Africa hosted its Annual Conference Study Days under the theme “Yves Congar and the Future of the Synodal and Missionary Church.” on 15–16 July.

Twenty presenters from eight countries took part, both online and in person, reflecting the truly universal character of the Church and the enduring relevance of Congar’s theological vision.

Presentations explored synodality, mission, communion, and participation, with strong emphasis on Congar’s conviction that the Church is the People of God, called to walk together in shared responsibility. Topics ranged from migration, social justice, and human dignity to healthcare, leadership, and religious life, showing synodality as a practical way of living the Gospel.

Forward-looking discussions included ecumenism, interreligious dialogue, liturgical unity, artificial intelligence, and Christ’s resurrection. The active participation of clergy, religious, laity, and a Dominican Associate highlighted inclusivity, especially the vital role of women and lay collaborators in shaping the Church’s missionary journey.

The Study Days became a living witness to Congar’s vision: a Church that listens, discerns, and journeys together. By uniting diverse voices across continents, the gathering offered a powerful synthesis of scholarship, dialogue, and fraternity an experience that both celebrated and renewed the Church’s commitment to being synodal and missionary in today’s world.

Proceedings of the study days symposium will be published as a book by the ATF Press in Australia.

The symposium for this year was organised by the Dominican Vice Province students, with Br Prince Ncube OP as the steering committee chairperson, accompanied by the student master Fr Neil Mitchell OP, who is also the lector and Fr Isaac Mutero, who is the regent of studies in the Vice Province.

Br Prince Ncube OP serves as Steering Committee Chairperson
