150th Jubilee of the Sisters of St Joseph-Hyacinthe

The atmosphere at St Augustine’s Major Seminary in Roma, Lesotho, was one of deep gratitude and spiritual elation as the community convened to mark a significant occasion: the 150th Jubilee anniversary of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Saint-Hyacinthe (SJSH).

The festivities began with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, serving as a fitting homage to a century and a half of missionary fervour, prayer, and unwavering service. The solemn liturgy was presided over by the Rector of the Seminary, Fr Albert Koetlisi, who concelebrated with Fr Ernest Ramochele, in the presence of the seminary community, religious sisters, and lay faithful.

From Humble Beginnings in Quebec to Strong Foundations in Lesotho

The rich history of the SJSH is rooted in Quebec, Canada, where the congregation was established by Blessed Bishop Louis Moreau. It started with merely three young women —among them Elizabeth Bergeron (later known in religion as Mother Saint-Joseph) and her two companions. Motivated by a singular, profound mission, they aimed to care for the sick and promote Christian education for children in rural regions.

In 1938, this flame of faith crossed into Lesotho, finding a home in Roma. Today, while the regional motherhouse stands proudly in the Diocese of Qacha’s Nek in Mokhotlong, the sisters’ lasting presence at St Augustine’s Major Seminary serves as a testament to their collaborative spirit in fostering future priests.

A Faith Founded on Solid Ground

In a poignant and uplifting homily, Fr Koetlisi recognised that the 150-year journey has not been devoid of challenges. The congregation has faced significant trials, hardships, and contemporary obstacles. Nevertheless, today marks a celebration of ultimate triumph and resilience. Father Koetlisi underscored that these adversities never shattered the congregation, as their foundation was never of this world.

“The congregation is destined to expand and thrive,” Fr Koetlisi emphasised, “as long as it remains wholly grounded in God. Similar to the wise individual in the Gospel, it must be steadfast — a house firmly established upon the rock.” He encouraged the faithful to persist in their fervent prayers for an increase in vocations and the spiritual development of the community.

Anticipating 2027

The Holy Mass signifies merely the commencement of a profound period of reflection and gratitude. The pinnacle of this momentous 150th Jubilee will take place at the main convent in Mokhotlong next year, in 2027. Although the specific date and program details will be revealed in due time, the Catholic community is already being urged to prepare their hearts for this significant pilgrimage of grace.

As the faithful depart to share this joy within their own parishes, the resonating refrain of the congregation serves as a poignant reminder of their patron’s quiet strength and intercession.
