For many believers, one of the most important questions of faith is whether God still speaks to people today.
The Catholic Church teaches that God continues to communicate with His people, guide them, and reveal His love through many different ways. Although public revelation ended with Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Apostles, God still speaks through the Church, Sacred Scripture, prayer, the sacraments, and the work of the Holy Spirit in everyday life.
The Catholic Church believes that God has never abandoned humanity. From the beginning of creation, God communicated with people such as Abraham, Moses, and the prophets. In the New Testament, God spoke fully through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus not only preached the message of salvation but also established the Church to continue His mission on earth. Before ascending into heaven, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to guide His followers into truth. Catholics believe this promise continues today through the Church.
One of the main ways God speaks is through Sacred Scripture, the Bible. Catholics believe the Bible is inspired by God and contains His message for humanity. During Mass, readings from the Old and New Testaments are proclaimed so that believers may hear God’s word. Many Catholics experience comfort, guidance, correction, and encouragement through reading and meditating on Scripture. The Church teaches that the Holy Spirit helps believers understand the meaning of God’s word and apply it to their lives.
God also speaks through the teachings of the Catholic Church. The Church’s leaders, especially the Pope and bishops, have the responsibility of preserving and teaching the faith handed down from the Apostles. This teaching authority is known as the Magisterium. Catholics believe that when the Church teaches faithfully according to Scripture and tradition, the Holy Spirit guides it. Through sermons, catechism, and official teachings, believers receive moral direction and spiritual wisdom that help them live according to God’s will.
Through the Sacraments
Another important way God communicates is through the sacraments. The sacraments are visible signs of God’s grace. In Baptism, Catholics become children of God. In the Eucharist, believers receive the Body and Blood of Christ, strengthening their relationship with Him. In Reconciliation, God speaks words of mercy and forgiveness through the priest. These sacraments are not merely rituals; Catholics believe they are encounters with the living God who continues to work in the lives of His people.
Prayer is also essential in hearing God’s voice. Catholics believe prayer is a conversation with God, involving both speaking and listening. Through silent reflection, worship, and personal prayer, believers open their hearts to God’s guidance. Sometimes God speaks through peace in the heart, through wisdom, or through the encouragement of others. Saints throughout Church history often testified that God guided them through prayer and deep faith. However, the Church also teaches that personal experiences must always agree with Scripture and Church teaching.
In modern times, some people expect God to speak only through extraordinary miracles or visions. While Catholics believe miracles can happen, they also recognize that God often speaks in quiet and ordinary ways. Acts of kindness, the advice of faithful people, the beauty of creation, and moments of conscience can all become ways through which God reaches His people. The Holy Spirit continues to inspire believers to live lives of holiness, justice, compassion, and service.
The Catholic Church teaches that God continues to speak because He desires a relationship with humanity. He speaks not to create fear but to guide people toward truth, love, and salvation. Through Scripture, tradition, the sacraments, prayer, and the Holy Spirit, Catholics believe God remains active and present in the world today. Although His voice may not always be dramatic or audible, faithful believers trust that God continues to lead His Church and His people every day.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for always loving and guiding Your people. Help us to hear Your voice through the teachings of the Church, through the Bible, through prayer, and through the Holy Spirit. Open our hearts so that we may follow Your will with faith and obedience. Strengthen us to live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ and help us trust that You are always near to us. May Your word bring peace, wisdom, and hope into our lives each day.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
