Who Is Waiting Outside Our Church Doors?

Who is outside our church doors

As 2026 moves towards its final months, perhaps the question the Catholic Church in Southern Africa needs to ask is not only how many people are attending church, but how many people are still waiting to be reached.

There is a question that can disturb us precisely because it is so simple: Who is still waiting outside our church doors?

Not necessarily outside the physical doors of a parish church, but outside the experience of Christian community, outside meaningful pastoral care, outside conversations about God, outside the support of a faith community and, perhaps most importantly, outside the hope that comes from knowing that their lives have meaning.

As 2026 moves towards its final months, this question deserves serious reflection.

There is much for which the Catholic Church in Southern Africa can give thanks. Across South Africa, Botswana and Eswatini, Catholic communities continue to celebrate the Eucharist, educate children, care for the sick, assist vulnerable communities, form young people, support families, accompany migrants, promote human dignity and respond to social challenges.

But gratitude should never prevent examination. The Church is alive because the Gospel is alive. And because the Gospel is alive, the Church must continually ask whether it is reaching the people and situations to which the Holy Spirit is calling it.

Perhaps our greatest challenge is not that we have stopped believing. Perhaps it is that there are people all around us who are searching for something we have been entrusted to share.

A Prayer for a Church That Goes Out

Lord Jesus Christ,

You called Your disciples to leave their familiar surroundings and proclaim the Good News. Today, we place the Catholic Church in Southern Africa into Your hands. Renew our hearts before we ask You to renew our structures. Teach us to see the people whom we sometimes overlook and to recognise the faces that may be standing just beyond the boundaries of our attention.

Lord, give Your Church the courage to go where people are hurting. Send us towards young people searching for purpose, families carrying burdens, people experiencing poverty, those affected by addiction, migrants seeking dignity, the lonely, the forgotten and all those who are searching for You without knowing where to begin.

Give our bishops wisdom, our priests holiness, our religious communities perseverance and our lay faithful courage. Raise up young Catholics who will love the Church deeply and serve society generously. Give parents the grace to pass on faith not merely through words but through the example of their lives.

Holy Spirit, make us a missionary people. Where we have become comfortable, awaken us. Where we have become discouraged, strengthen us. Where we have become inward-looking, send us outward. Where we have spoken without listening, teach us to listen. Where we have judged too quickly, teach us mercy. Where we have seen problems, teach us to see people.

Lord, bless Southern Africa.

Amen
