A newbook of Catholic jokes aims to bring laughs.
Church Chuckles: The Big Book of Catholic Jokes, collated and edited by Southern Cross editor Günther Simmermacher, is published under the Southern Cross Books imprint.
The book also includes more than 60 classic cartoons by Conrad previously published in The Southern Cross, starting in 1993.
Mr Simmermacher said that at almost 500 jokes over 240 pages, this might be the most comprehensive collection of Catholic jokes yet.
The jokes are ordered in categories — such as “Priests in the Parish”, “Religious Orders”, “Catechism”, “Their Lordships, Graces and Eminences” — with Conrad cartoons to illustrate these themes.
“I think this collection has something for everybody,” said Mr Simmermacher, adding that compiling the book took several years.
Many of the jokes have appeared in the popular “Church Chuckle” on the Southern Cross back pages.
Mr Simmermacher rewrote almost all the jokes in the collection to suit the South African context and “to conform, at least notionally, with Catholic teachings and practices”.
He believes the collection will be popular with all Catholics with a sense of humour, and “will also be a useful resource for priests who are looking for a suitable gag to get the congregation’s attention in homilies”, Mr Simmermacher joked.
All proceeds of the book will go to support The Southern Cross.
Church Chuckles: The Big Book of Catholic Jokes sells for R180 plus p&p, and is available from email@example.com or 021 465-5007 or from the Southern Cross offices at 10 Tuin Plein, Cape Town.
