September is Deaf Awareness Month and World Day of the Deaf is observed every year on the last Sunday in September.
The month provided teachers and learners at Holy Family College with the opportunity to highlight the importance of providing equal access to members of communities who are deaf, hard of hearing, or experiencing hearing loss. Raising awareness through month-long observations and learning opportunities such as this is an important part of creating understanding, and increasing access for children. The goal of inclusive classrooms is to provide all students with an appropriate learning environment to allow each the opportunity to reach their potential.
Holy Family College: We believe that an inclusive education system provides a better quality education for all our children and is instrumental in changing discriminatory attitudes. Our school, provides the context for a child’s first relationship with the world outside their families, enabling the development of social relationships and interactions. On behalf of the Principal, Mrs Ursula Collings, the Management and our Staff, we are humbled by the in-depth time taken in the teaching and learning of sign language and cueing. We are proud of our child Tayla Chetty, who was born hearing impaired. Tayla learns through cueing and lip reading. Tayla teaches us daily the importance of resilience, perseverance and gratitude as we grow in understanding of one another, through our life experiences.
A deaf awareness assembly was held during the month where learners met Monique and Lynette. Monique was born deaf and Lynette has been deaf since 9 years old. Monique now wears a hearing aid. Both use lip reading, sign language and cueing to communicate. Monique and Lynette signed a lovely story about the eagle and the chicken.
