Rare Diseases Day at St Teresa’s School
St Teresa’s School in Johannesburg celebrated Rare Diseases Day by purchasing stickers for R10 and wearing civvies to school. All proceeds from the sale of the stickers went to Rare Diseases South Africa, a registered non-profit organisation advocating for a better tomorrow for the #1in15 South Africans impacted by rare diseases and congenital disorders. Rare Diseases South Africa offers support, improved health service and better overall quality of life to the 4,1 million South Africans who have been, or will be, diagnosed with a rare disease or congenital disorder in their lifetime. Their mission is to ensure a better tomorrow for all those impacted by a rare disease.
The Senior Primary School was honoured to welcome Nomsa Mtshali from Rare Diseases South Africa who highlighted the realities faced by individuals living with rare diseases. Nomsa’s presence shed light on topics that are sometimes difficult to confront, sparking important conversations and fostering understanding. Through her insights, students and staff alike were able to reflect on their own lives and gain perspective.
Mrs Lindsey Verster, St Teresa’s Senior Primary Principal expressed gratitude for Nomsa’s visit, stating, “Today was a valuable opportunity for our community to come together, learn, and empathise with those facing rare diseases. We are thankful for Nomsa’s willingness to educate us on rare diseases.”
St Teresa’s School remains committed to supporting causes that promote their Mercy values of compassion and collaboration and incorporate understanding and inclusivity within its community and beyond.
