Youth of Far East Rand Deanery Celebrate Opening Mass
By Kati Dijane – Over 150 young people from the Far East Rand Deanery celebrated the Divine Mercy Sunday on April 7 at Kristo iNkosi Catholic Church in Springs, Ekurhuleni.
The youth energised the liturgy through music. Parish priest, Father Chaka Motanyane OP, the dean of the far east rand, warmly welcomed the youth. During the homily, in which he talked about the Gospel of the day, Jn 20:19-31, the gift of peace, power (Holy Spirit) and purpose was highlighted to parishioners. Father Motanyane shared how Jesus dealt with his disciples after his Resurrection, mentioning that the only disciple he last saw before he died on the cross was John to whom he gave his beloved Mother.
He then asked how one deals with betrayal and denial from people. Divine Mercy Sunday is a reminder of Jesus’ gift of peace and mercy to humanity, in the face of troubles. He also added that through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Church has been empowered to continue the work that Jesus entrusted to people, that of spreading the Gospel. Addressing the youth, Father Motanyane cautioned them against trying to fit in with the crowd and to choose their friends wisely while pursuing their God-given purpose.
The dean then blessed the executive – Siyabonga Beson, chairperson (in absentia), Menzi Magagula, vice-chairperson, Kopano Peta, secretary-general, Tshepiso Pico, vice-secretary, KomoheloQozo, media officer, Martinet Mathunda, liturgy officer, and Thabo Nyakale, an additional member. They were then officially introduced to the parishioners.
After Mass, the youth shared their hopes for the year in terms of activities, got to know each other, indulged in great food and played games to break the ice.
