Congregation of the Missionaries of Mariannhill open their doors to small businesses
By Judy Figland, Francis Pfanner Centre, Mariannhill – Mariannhill Monastery was buzzing with small and micro businesses trying to sell their goods on September 27 in an initiative taken by the Congregation, after seeing the financial hardships and challenges faced by most families in sustaining themselves.
Sustainability is part of the Congregation of Mariannhill Missionaries’ history. When Abbott Francis Pfanner could not sustain himself and his Brothers at Dunbrody in the 1800s, he made the trek north, finally settling at what is known as Mariannhill today.
The event started at 7:00 am with a Fun Run and Walk , which is aimed at encouraging a healthy lifestyle. This was followed by the Flea Market, which had over twenty vendors and lots of fun for children on the jumping castle, “Slip and Slide” and face painting.
DJ C esy set the tone with vibrant music.
As part of their heritage, people were taken on historical tours of the Monastery by the brothers who shared life at the Monastery from its inception in 1882 by Abbot Francis Pfanner. People on tours were given a glimpse of the interior cloister of the Monastery and shown the work done in various workshops, namely, carpentry, ironworks, tailoring, sculpting, candlemaking and the printing press. The Repository was also open for tourist to purchase their Sacred items.
Anyone wishing to do a tour of the Monastery may call 031 700 4288 or 031 700 6066 to book a tour. This initiative is a first and will be followed in December with a Christmas Market.
