Celebration of Faith: Pallottines Merrivale Community Marks Feast Day and First Consecration

By Br Lindani Maxwell Mzelemu SAC – The Society of the Catholic Apostolate (Pallottine Merrivale Community) in KZN celebrated her Feast Day on January 24, a momentous occasion made even more special by the First Consecration of three brothers: Br Lindani Maxwell Mzelemu SAC, Br Sphamandla Gabriel Myeza SAC, and Br Mfanafuthi Martin Mbutho SAC.
The celebration drew a large gathering of faithful who came to witness this significant spiritual milestone.
The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Fr Ndumiso Praising Mkhize, SAC, the Delegate Superior of St Joseph Delegature in the Heart of Jesus Province. Many priests concelebrated with him, including the President of St Joseph’s Theological Institute (SJTI), Fr Joseph Phiri OMI where the Pallottines in South Africa pursue their academic formation.
During his homily, Fr Ndumiso delivered a heartfelt and thought-provoking message. He cautioned the candidates (three brothers) about the danger of becoming overly attached to religious vows or promises while neglecting the deeper call to be an instrument of peace and love. “It is not good,” he emphasised, “to use the power that comes through vows to abuse or mistreat others.” He went on to remind the faithful that religious life must always move “from ritual to relationship.” Religious vows or promises, he stressed, should not end with the ceremony alone; they must lead believers into a deeper relationship with Christ and with their neighbours.
In the Pallottine tradition, members embrace the three evangelical counsels, as is common in most religious communities. However, Pallottines also make three additional promises: Perseverance, the sharing of Resources, and a Spirit of Service grounded in the love of Christ. These commitments are known as promises within Pallottine spirituality, distinguishing them from the term vows used in many other religious Congregations.
The day was truly magnificent—a beautiful testament to the brothers’ dedication to God and their desire to follow in the footsteps of St Vincent Pallotti, founder of the Society of the Catholic Apostolate popularly known as Pallotines. The liturgy was prayerful, well-prepared, and deeply engaging, enabling the congregation to participate fully in the celebration.
The community extends her heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended, supported, and witnessed the profession of the three brothers. Their presence made the day even more memorable and meaningful.
