Why leave the Catholic Church?
Three letters in The Southern Cross of June 3-9 caught my eye: PR Margeot on the Tridentine Mass; Sibusiso Mhlongo’s observation of Catholics defecting to pentecostal movements, and Roy Glover on being ashamed to be Catholic following the revelations of abuses in Irish Catholic institutions.
If we reflect on the Last Supper when Christ instituted the Holy Eucharist, we will see that there was no great fanfare. All he said was: “This is my Body and this is my Blood. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood will have eternal life. Do this in memory of me.”
How can we want to leave the Church to join other denominations? How can we say we are ashamed to be called Catholic?
If we believe that Jesus Christ started the one, true and universal Church, we should then live out his teaching.
