St Mary of the Angels Parish puts Laudato Si’ into Action
The parish at St Mary of the Angels in Athlone, Cape Town, celebrated Laudato Si’ Week 2022.
The parish priest, children, and parishioners started the first phase of a “Clean Up to Green Up” project in the parking area at the front of the church, which is under the care of the Capuchin Franciscans.
“We decided to clean up around the area and brought in lots of compost, which was donated, as our soil was not in great shape. Once we had done the cleaning, we planted lots of water-wise plants which require minimal maintenance,” said Arlette Marais, the parish’s Laudato Si’ animator.
Laudato Si’ is Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical on the environment, issued in 2015.
“Each day during the Laudato Si’ Week, we shared on our parish social media pages, information on Laudato Si’, the goals, Pope Francis’ talk on the environment, ‘Biodiversity Explained’, our Catholic Social Teaching on Creation, and more. Our call to action included a “49 Ways to Care for Creation” information poster. So a lot was about education and awareness,” Ms Marais explained.
“To put action to one of the Laudato Si’ goals, we requested families to bring non-perishable items for distribution to the needy,” she added.
The parish also had a Rosary for Creation, led by the Legion of Mary.
