Accident could lead to challenge of abortion laws – 1996
The case of a Texas man convicted of harming an unborn child could provide the state’s courts, and ultimately the United States Supreme Courts, with the chance to undo current abortion legislation. Judie Brown, president of the American Life League, said that it may be possible, following the 16 year sentence for manslaughter given to Frank Flores Cuellar, 50, over the death of a baby delivered premature after a car crash. Jeannie Coronado underwent an emergency caesarean but the baby, named Krystal, died two days later due to extensive brain damage after Cuellar, with a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit, and drove his truck into the car driven by eight months pregnant Coronado.
Young men’s groups welcomed – 1949
His Holiness Pope Pius XII has given warm approval and encouragement to associations of Catholic young men, recommending to them a three-point programme of spiritual activities so that they may “become powerful agencies in strengthening the Faith”. The three points the Pope emphasised were: 1. reception of the sacraments even more frequently than once a month as the rules prescribe, 2. introduction of spiritual retreats and exercise everywhere for as far as possible, and 3. to be examples for less fervent Catholics and also for non-Catholics who might be interested in the true Faith.
