This weekend, on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 February, anniversary commemorations of the late Archbishop Denis Hurley will be marked in Durban with special musical performances.
A Saturday afternoon opera and organ music recital will be held at Emmanuel Cathedral at 14:00, followed by the annual Denis Hurley Centre (DHC) Stakeholders Meeting in the DHC at 15:00. A Memorial Mass honouring Archbishop Hurley will be celebrated in the cathedral at 17:00.
Each year since 2009, the dates closest to the anniversary of Archbishop Hurley’s death on 13 February 2004 have been marked as a “Hurley Weekend”. It features the Denis Hurley Centre stakeholder report-back and commemorative prayers, which gives the public an opportunity to learn more about this busy watershed centre in the heart of the Durban.
An exceptional musical event has been created with organist AJ Bethke playing the recently-restored cathedral organ, accompanying opera singer Nozuko Teto. No admission will be charged but a collection will be taken towards the cathedral’s fundraising project.
Dr Anthony-John Bethke is a music lecturer in UKZN School of Arts and the director of music at St Cyprian’s Anglican church. He regularly gives recitals, and he also regularly presents the Friends of Music pre-concert lectures prior to KZN Philharmonic World Symphony Season Concerts.

Organist AJ Bethke and opera singer Nozuko Teto are performing a free concert of Organ and Opera Music on Saturday afternoon, 11 Feb at 2pm in Emmanuel Cathedral.
Nozuko Teto hails from a small town in the Eastern Cape. After a highly successful career singing in international opera theatres, she has returned to her homeland to wow local audiences with her sensational soprano voice. She made an impromptu appearance when she sang at the DHC Meal of Reconciliation in December.
On Sunday 12 February at 7.45am and 10am in the Cathedral there will be Memorial Masses with Bishop Neil Frank of Mariannhill, honouring his fellow Oblate Archbishop Hurley.
The invitation to all events is extended to all members of the public, and to DHC patrons, trustees, donors; government representatives, partners from other NGOs, volunteers, staff members, service-users, cathedral parishioners, clergy and people from different Christian denominations and from other religious traditions.
