Mandela Day at Brescia House
Brescia House School pupils have been knitting scarves in the colours of the South African flag. The giant display was set-out in the school’s hub on Mandela Day, and will be donated to those in need, along with numerous other items crafted by the school’s community over the past few months.
To celebrate Mandela Day Brescia House School in Johannesburg once again gathered their school community to assist with a number of initiatives. The School’s Intermediate Phase braved the cold weather to get up extra early on 18th July to hand out beanies, scarves and a cup of hot chocolate to pedestrians on their way to work.
Their Foundation Phase students made booklets that will be delivered to Witkoppen School and Diepsloot Nursery School, while their Grade 4s made Jars of Hope for Witkoppen Clinic. The Grade 5s wrote letters of appreciation to SAPS Douglasdale, Witkoppen Clinic, and Pik-it-up in Bryanston. The Grade 6 girls also assisted Witkoppen School by making stationery holders.
The High School students busied themselves knitting scarves in the colours of our South African flag. These scarves will all be donated to those in need. As with previous years, the school encouraged their community to knit and crochet squares for blankets. These blankets are then usually exhibited in a mass display on Mandela Day, before being distributed to those in need. However this year, due to the dramatic drop in temperature across the last few days, the school decided not to keep all the crocheted and knitted blankets until Mandela day (18 July), but to rather donate them sooner.
Brescia House School extends their thanks to their students, staff, parents, grandparents and our community at large for all their contributions to this worthy initiative.
