100 Years for Sister de Chantal Harkin

Assumption Sister de Chantal Harkin, who spent all her active life teaching in South Africa — including with Fr Richard O’Riordan at Zengisa Minor Seminary, Umtata — turned 100 years of age on February 4 in Assumption Convent, Ballynahinch, Ireland.
Sr de Chantal celebrated her 100th with her religious community, as well as 15 members of her own family, including a brother and a sister. In the photo also is Sr Cecelia Newell who nursed and cared for the retired and frail Sisters in South Africa for many years.
“Sr de Chantal was my Standard 5 teacher in Port Elizabeth, and taught me the values of Christian Social Justice and a love of the Scriptures, through the CLG Movement at St Augustine’s Primary School,” Redemptorist Father Sean Collins recalls.
