Neocatechumenal Way Pilgrimage to Bl Benedict Daswa Shrine
By Pietro Poggiali – The young people of the Neocatechumenal Way who embarked on a pilgrimage to the tomb of Blessed Benedict Daswa returned enriched by their experiences. The journey, blessed by Cardinal Stephen Brislin and Bishop John Selemela of Pretoria, was marked by acts of service, sacred scripture readings, and profound encounters.
An Unforgettable Meeting with the Daswa Family
A highlight of the pilgrimage was the unexpected presence of the Daswa family. Lufuno, the first son, shared his insights on forgiveness, emphasising that it is possible only through the blood of Christ. Benedicta, the last daughter who was still in her mother’s womb at the time of her father’s martyrdom, shared her moving testimony. She affirmed that her father’s death was not in vain and that their presence at his tomb was a testament to his legacy.
Graces Received and Vocational Calls
Many young people recounted receiving graces they had prayed for during a previous pilgrimage in 2018, including restored marriages and healings from addictions. Benedicta attributed her father’s martyrdom to the salvation of many.
At the pilgrimage’s conclusion, a vocational meeting inspired 15 boys and 5 girls to begin a journey of discernment towards consecrated life. Dino Furgione, responsible for the Neocatechumenal Way in Southern Africa, encouraged the young people, emphasizing that Christ is working a multiplication miracle through the blood of Martyr Daswa and promises a hundredfold to those who follow in his footsteps. He urged them not to fear welcoming Christ and sharing the good news with their suffering society.
This pilgrimage was a transformative experience for the young people, filled with spiritual growth, personal encounters, and a renewed commitment to their faith.
