Neocatechumenal Way Jubilee Pilgrimage
By Lauren O’Connor-May – Hundreds of pilgrims led by the Neocatechumenal Way team were the first to inaugurate the Jubilee Door at Our Lady of Good Hope in Sea Point, Cape Town.
The pilgrims, who numbered more than 300 brethren from several different Cape Town parishes, hiked from Green Point lighthouse on Sunday, 16 November. They sang and prayed the Glorious Mysteries of the rosary, interspersed with hymns, before passing through the jubilee door to celebrate Mass together. The cathedral, Our Lady of the Flight into Egypt, was the only designated Holy Door for the Jubilee, but will be closed in January 2026 for roof restoration work. By a special decree and with the faculties granted by the papal bull, Cardinal Brislin ceased pilgrimages to the Cathedral of St Mary of the Flight into Egypt and nominated Our Lady of Good Hope in Sea Point as a Pilgrimage Church for the Jubilee 2025, granting the graces, blessings and indulgences according to the norms of Spes non confundit.
The Apostolic Nuncio for South Africa, Archbishop Henryk Jagodziński, said in a letter to the pilgrims: “I was very glad to hear about your Jubilee procession in the heart of Cape Town. Our Christian faith has a missionary dimension at its core. What we have experienced and continue to experience on our journey through life, we can pass on and make visible in the society of today, that is the Mercy of an ever-loving God, manifested in Jesus Christ.” Dino Furgione, head of the Neocatechumenal Way Southern Africa, told the participant: “Christ, who is the head, was waiting for us here to be reconciled with his body, wounded by many sins. Courage! The Lord asks you to give him the burden of your sins because he alone can repay them with his love and mercy.” The Sea Point Jubilee door will remain open until the 28th December, which brings to an end the Year of Hope.
