Capuchin Poor Clare Sisters Appeal for Help
Capuchin Poor Clare Sisters in Swellendam, Oudtshoorn diocese, have issued an open letter appealing for help as they are “presently facing significant financial challenges in maintaining our convent”.
The letter, signed by Sr Benedicta OSC, says that “for many years, our Sisters have dedicated their lives to prayer, service, and the spiritual and practical support of those entrusted to our care. We remain deeply committed to our mission and vocation.”
However, the Sisters now must appeal to the public for help.
“The rising costs of essential repairs, utilities, food, medical care for our elderly Sisters, infirmary, drainage and solar [energy] as well as daily operational needs have placed a heavy burden on our limited resources. Despite careful stewardship and sincere efforts to manage expenses responsibly, we find ourselves in need of assistance,” Sr Benedicta said.
The Capuchin Poor Clare Sisters arrived in Swellendam in 1952, and moved into their current convent at Christmas 1960.
Bishop Noel Rucastle of Oudsthoorn confirmed to The Southern Cross that the Sisters’ letter is authentic and that the needs they describe are real.
“Any financial contribution, whether large or small, would greatly assist us in preserving our convent and continuing our ministry. Your generosity would not only sustain our home but also strengthen the work we do in service to God and our community,” Sr Benedicta wrote.
“Please be assured that we hold all our benefactors in our daily prayers. May God bless you abundantly for your kindness and consideration.”
Sr Benedicta invited potential donors to contact her for further information about the Sisters’ needs or on how to contribute.
