The 100 Most Read Bible Verses Series
Deacon Lionel Cooper of Corpus Christi parish in Wynberg, Cape Town –
The Bible is a library of seventy three books presenting God’s purpose with this earth and his plan of redemption for humankind. These books were written over a period of almost 1,600 years and their various authors or scribes (the writers of the Bible wrote by the inspiration of God) were drawn from all ranks of society. Kings, political leaders, priests, scribes, shepherds, fishermen, scholars all played a part in producing it and yet despite the great divergence of time and class among the writers there is complete harmony in all that they teach and record. Each of the writers presents a different facet of the “one great hope”. The call of Jesus to follow him without reserve.
What is the Gospel? The word Gospel means “good news,” which is the message of forgiveness for sin through the atoning work of Jesus Christ. It is essentially God’s rescue plan of redemption for those who will trust in His divine Son in order to be reconciled to a just and holy God. The essential content of this saving message is clearly laid out for us in the Bible.
Reading the Bible is a signpost that will lead the reader to a map to follow and ultimately lead and point the reader to its final destination. On this journey the reader will encounter amongst others mercy, kindness, gentleness and compassion in a way that only Jesus the Divine Mentor can impart.
Deacon Cooper compiled the “100Scripture100” booklet for easy reference to the most loved and most quoted passages in the Bible – here we begin our reproduction of this booklet with his kind permission.
