Taking on the Future at Holy Family College

“Holy Family College Grade 6 learner, Sarah Firmin, is a natural when it comes to computers and coding, fuelled by her hunger and thirst to learn and improve”, says her Computer Literacy Teacher, Mr Masikati. She has the passion and confidence to try out new things and solve coding problems.

Sarah is one of the many learners at Holy Family College who has taken up Scratch coding and is fast excelling in it. Scratch is a high-level block-based visual programming language that is targeted primarily at children from 8-16 years old, an educational tool for programming. It is the starting stage for developing Computational thinking and problem-solving in young learners and future computer programmers. Miss Firmin, as she is affectionately called her teacher, is a protégé at it, with lots more room for growth.

Her interest in coding and IT is shared by many of her peers at Holy Family College. Programming should be taken up by learners as young as possible to develop a love and interest in the discipline. Considering the rate at which Technology and all things computers are already central to our day to day lives and the future to come, it would be very advisable and encouraged for learners to take up this subject.

Mr Masikati teaches Scratch coding from Grade 5 to Grade 8, and Information Technology from Grade 10 to 12. This ensures that learners have a wide and enriched base of programming knowledge by the time they leave for their tertiary education. They can then study further to be any of several career paths including Data Scientist, Software Developer, Information Security Analyst, Computer Systems Analyst, Web Developer. Computer Research Scientist and so forth.

Mr Masikati went on to say, “Sarah has a bright technology orientated future ahead of her and I will be right by her side, doing the best I can, to make that a reality”.
