Corpus Christi Wynberg Celebrates 85 Years

Corpus Christi parish in Wynberg celebrated its 85th year anniversary. Each family received a commemorative rosary and a replica of the church was made as a cake. Archbishop Stephen Brislin joined the parish for the celebrations.

Corpus Christi church was opened on July 18 1937 and blessed by Pallottine Bishop Francis Hennemann less than 8 months after the foundation stone was laid.
It was through the generosity of the local people that Corpus Christi was equipped so magnificently. In the past, the two crosses on top of the church towers used to be lit up at night and on Sunday evenings the peal of bells used to ring out across Wynberg calling people back to church for the second time for evening devotions.
The consecration of Corpus Christi was carried out on March 19 1946. Bishop Hennemann was assisted by Mgr o’Rourke and many other priests including Fr Owen McCann (later Cardinal) who was Master of Ceremonies. Relics of Saints Innocenta and Amandus were later placed in the altar stone and the twelve crosses and candleholders were fixed to the walls of the church.
