Sister Sarah McMahon CSJ Celebrates 80 Years of Religious Life
Sister Sarah McMahon CSJ
Sister Sarah McMahon was born in Savannah, Georgia. She was received into the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet, Georgia Province in 1943 as Sister Marguerite Marie. She received a bachelor’s degree in history/education from the College of St. Teresa in 1959.
Sister Sarah taught elementary education for 47 years. She began in Georgia at Mt. St. Joseph School in Augusta (1944-51; 1952-53); Sacred Heart Grade School in Savannah (1951-52; 1955-58); St. Joseph Grade School in Marietta (1953-55); and St. Mary on the Hill Grade School in Augusta (1958-63). For the next two years, she taught at St. Patrick Grade School in St. Joseph, Missouri. She returned to Valdosta, Georgia, in 1965 to teach at St. John the Evangelist Grade School.
In 1966, Sister Sarah taught four years in Kansas City, Missouri, at Visitation Grade School. She went on to teach for another year at St. Joseph Grade School in Marietta and then one year at Little Flower Grade School in Mobile, Alabama.
In 1972, Sister Sarah began serving in Michigan, teaching for two years at St. Michael Grade School in Marquette. She then spent one year teaching religious education at the Catholic Religious Center Hancock-Houghton.
Returning to Georgia in 1975, Sister Sarah served as the religious education coordinator at St. Joseph in Athens until 1977. The following year, she taught once more at St. Mary on the Hill Grade School.
In 1978, Sister Sarah taught one year in Muskogee, Oklahoma, at St. Joseph Grade School. Then, she taught for two years in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, at Valle Grade School. For the next four years, Sister Sarah taught at the Village of St. Joseph in Atlanta. In 1986, she served as a tutor at Little Flower Grade School in Mobile, Alabama, before transitioning to teacher until 1988.
Sister Sarah then moved to Fetus, Missouri, where she taught for one year at Sacred Heart Grade School, followed by two years at Immaculate Conception Grade School in neighbouring Union, Missouri. From 1991 to 1994, she served her CSJ community as a staff member for the St. Joseph Provincial House. Sister Sarah spent her last five years in education as a tutor at St. Francis de Sales Grade School in Denver, Colorado.
Since 1999, Sister Sarah has resided at Nazareth Living Centre where she continues to carry out her ministry of prayer and presence.
