Nelson Mandela Day at Holy Family College in Durban
Holy Family College celebrated Nelson Mandela Day early, hosting 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day (South Africa) on the school field on Saturday, 10 June 2023. On the 18th July learners planted vegetable gardens around the school, encouraging sustainability. The beautiful HFC blanket (pictured below) was crocheted by Mrs Deidre Bevan
A special assembly was held in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day. The South African Anthem was sung while Grade 12 learner, Thakasa Kubheka and Principal Mrs Ursula Collings, raised the South African flag, in accordance with protocol.
Extracts from Thakasa’s Mandela Day Speech:
“Mandela would grow up to become an extremely revolutionary man, who would ultimately become the biggest contributor to the end of our Country’s brutal apartheid regime. Mandela dedicated his entire life selflessly to the betterment of all South African citizens.
“Today we celebrate his life and legacy with a yearning passion to gain his qualities of love, forgiveness, and most of all compassionate leadership. “It is now in your hands” are the words given to us by our late former President, Nelson Mandela”.
“The South African flag is a symbol of the freedom and liberty given to us by the sweat and tears of our forefathers and great influencers like Mandela. It is a symbol of how a once brutal and separated Country can become united, regardless of heritage or background. The multitude of colours boasted cohesively on our flag is the eternal sign of the achievements of Mandela’s dreams and the hope for a better future. We are now unified in pride and love”.
Romans 15:5-7 – May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.
Happy Nelson Mandela Day!
