Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Polokwane Celebrates a Century

One of the historic churches established by the Catholic Church is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year.

Our Lady of Good Counsel parish, famously known as Motse Maria in Doornspruit Mission falls under the jurisdiction of the Catholic Diocese of Polokwane.

To mark this milestone, the Diocese of Polokwane will hold its annual diocesan pilgrimage at Doornspruit Mission on September 17, 2023.

According to the bishop, His Lordship Jeremiah Madimetja of Polokwane Diocese, it is estimated that over 5000 people are expected to attend this event.

“This is a milestone worth celebrating. The parish is one of the churches that was established by missionaries not only in South Africa but across the African continent.

“Today churches are faced with many challenges but we have remained resilient and this celebration will not only be about the beautiful history but we will also cherish our resilience and reaffirm the relevance of Christianity in modern society”, said Bishop Masela.

On  September 17 the celebrations will start with Holy Mass, followed by a procession with the Blessed Sacrament and conclude with the blessing of the missionaries’ tombstone of commemoration.

Preparations for the big event are already underway and those who want to be part of it through financial support are urged to contact the Diocese.

“Great work is ahead of us and through your support, we can make this event memorable and accord it the dignity it deserves,” said Bishop Masela.
