Albert Nolan OP Tribute “Reluctant Prophet” wins award
Three Dominicans have been awarded a prestigious prize for their work on a book of tributes to the late Fr Albert Nolan OP.
Frs Mike Deeb, Mark James and Br Philippe Denis have been named as the recipients of this year’s Andrew Murray Desmond Tutu Prize for theological publications in any official South African language other than Afrikaans for their editorship of Reluctant Prophet: Tributes to Albert Nolan, published by University of Johannesburg Press.
“This impressive book with 72 articles by a number of different authors shines a light on the life, faith and writing of Albert Nolan as pastor, priest, prophet and political activist,” the Andrew Murray Prize committee said in a statement.
“The contributors’ differing perspectives ultimately offer a comprehensive view of a life’s journey for our time, and a freeing message of Christ to act fairly in today’s world. It is the connection of theological insight with concrete issues of justice within the community, with a call to action which makes this book and Nolan’s life relevant in every context. This work has the potential to initiate conversation about Christians’ image of God, not only in South Africa, but worldwide, given the tendency towards ‘inwards’ forms of nationalism,” the statement said.
The judges in this category were Miranda Pillay, Nontando Hadebe and Fanie Snyman.
Reluctant Prophet was reviewed by Günther Simmermacher in the October 2023 issue of The Southern Cross. Read it online

The Desmond Tutu-Gerrit Brand Prize for debut work is awarded to Rooiletterkind by Sandy Schoeman, which addresses the process and consequences of adoption, as well as the dynamics of being a mother and family relationships
The CLF-Elise Tempelhoff Award for Environmental Conservation and Justice is made to Lizelle de Bruin, a radio producer, presenter, and director of Wordwise Media.
