St Benedict the Black Parish Celebrates Safeguarding Sunday
By Thoko Malinga – St Benedict the Black in Zone 3 Sebokeng, Archdiocese of Johannesburg, celebrated Safeguarding Sunday on July 28, a pivotal event dedicated to reinforcing the importance of protecting vulnerable members of our community.
The day was a meaningful reflection on the church’s commitment to safeguarding and its collective responsibility to create a safe and nurturing environment.
The Safeguarding Committee played a significant role in the day’s events, taking the opportunity to remind parishioners of their essential function in upholding the church’s safeguarding policies. The committee explained the significance of safeguarding, which encompasses protecting children from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. It emphasised the importance of vigilance and shared how the committee supports the church’s mission to ensure a safe space for everyone, especially children.
The celebration was further enriched by a moving and educational presentation by the children of the parish. The youngsters recited heartfelt poems that addressed themes of abuse and protection, bringing a powerful message of awareness and compassion. Their performance was followed by intercession prayers, where they prayed for those affected by abuse and for the strength of the community to support one another.
A notable highlight of the day was the insightful talk delivered by a representative from Sebokeng Childline. The speaker provided an overview of the types of abuse and detailed the critical role that Childline plays in supporting individuals and families within the community. The presentation included information on how Childline operates, the services it provides, and its collaborative efforts with local organisations to offer support and resources. The talk was both informative and inspiring, shedding light on the vital work being done to aid those in need.
To conclude the day’s events on a joyous note, children were delighted to receive party packs as a treat after mass. This gesture was not only a fun and festive conclusion to Safeguarding Sunday but also a reminder of the importance of caring for and celebrating the youngest members of the parish.
Safeguarding Sunday at St Benedict the Black parish was a significant occasion that underscored the parish’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of all its members. Through education, reflection, and celebration, the parish reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding and the collective responsibility to foster a safe and supportive community.
