Requiems in SA for Kennedy
Requiem Masses were celebrated throughout South Africa for assassinated US President John F Kennedy, a Catholic. The US ambassador and government ministers attended the Mass in Pretoria’s Sacred Heart cathedral. Meanwhile, Pope Paul VI recalled meeting the slain president, “recognising in him a great wisdom and high regard for the well-being of mankind”.

‘Guillotine’ at the Council
The Southern Cross’ special correspondent at the Second Vatican Council outlines the latest news, and notes that Archbishop John Garner of Pretoria “got in his word” in a discussion on bishops’ conferences before “the guillotine” fell on deliberations at 11:00 on a Thursday morning. “Another, Archbishop Hurley, was among the decapitated,” the correspondent noted, meaning he did not get the chance to speak. That correspondent was Archbishop Hurley himself.
Special Mass – in English
The national convention of the Knights of Da Gama ended with an unusual Mass — in English. Celebrated by Fr Patrick Holland OMI in Durban’s Emmanuel cathedral, the Mass included Anglican hymns such as “Praise, My Soul, The King Of Heaven”, while the Kyrie, the Sanctus and the Agnus Dei were rendered in English.
