The Salesian Institute Youth Projects (SIYP) is making significant strides in addressing youth unemployment in Cape Town through its innovative Waves of Change Maritime Programme. This initiative offers a lifeline to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, providing them with the skills and opportunities to embark on rewarding careers in the maritime industry.

A Beacon of Hope

By partnering with leading sea fishing companies and maritime training institutions, SIYP provides comprehensive training that equips young people with the necessary certifications and practical skills. This includes safety protocols, technical expertise, and the essential SAMSA certifications required for seafaring jobs.

More Than Just Training

The Waves of Change Programme goes beyond technical training, focusing on holistic development. Through a rigorous 3-day orientation and a 10-day life skills programme, participants develop the essential soft skills needed to succeed in the workplace and in life. “The Waves of Change Maritime Programme isn’t just about providing training; it’s about creating a pathway to stability and self-sufficiency for youth who may otherwise have no access to such opportunities,” says Fr Francois Dufour, CEO, Salesian Institute Youth Projects. “We’re not only giving them skills; we’re instilling hope and enabling them to change their lives and positively impact their communities.”

A Pathway to a Brighter Future

By offering opportunities to work on local fishing vessels or even cruise ships, SIYP opens doors to a world of possibilities for young people who may have otherwise been trapped in cycles of poverty and unemployment. This initiative not only provides economic stability but also fosters personal growth and a sense of purpose. “SIYP offers a crucial alternative,” says Abraham Lottering, Waves of Change Programme Manager. “Through structured, transformative programmes, we guide youth toward sustainable employment and skills development.”

A Collaborative Effort

SIYP’s commitment to empowering youth is evident in its collaborative approach. By working closely with industry partners and dedicated staff, the organisation ensures that each participant receives the support and guidance needed to thrive. Each year, the Waves of Change Programme equips around 350 young people with Lifeskills training and offers support services to an additional 3,500 youth through a dedicated helpdesk facility.

As SIYP continues to make waves in the lives of young people, it serves as a powerful example of how education and training can transform communities and create a brighter future for all.
