St Joseph Sodality Embarks Upon Major Recruitment Drive in Lesotho
By Bokang Tsoanamatsie – The St Joseph Sodality in Lesotho is currently engaged in an extensive recruitment initiative throughout the nation of Lesotho, in anticipation of its anticipated formal recognition by the Lesotho Catholic Bishops Conference later this year.
The inaugural group of aspirants for the St Joseph Sodality in Lesotho was welcomed at St Joseph’s Parish in the Archdiocese of Maseru in November 2021. At that time, 30 Catholic men joined as aspirants.
This foundational effort was spearheaded by the St Joseph Sodality from the Diocese of Klerksdorp. Currently, there are 120 aspirants awaiting authorisation from the Lesotho Catholic Bishops Conference to be accepted as full members of the Sodality in Lesotho, representing all four dioceses within the country, often referred to as the Mountain Kingdom.
The Archdiocese of Maseru boasts the highest number of St Joseph Sodality members, with participants from the parishes of Roma Ha MaJesu, St Vincent Church, Nazareth Church, Mofumahali oa Lefatse, and the Marie Mabasotho Pastoral Oblate Centre.
These men have initiated a campaign titled “Let’s Fetch Them”, through which they visit various parishes across the country to encourage Catholic men to develop a devotion to St Joseph and join the sodality.
To date they have successfully recruited over eighty men. The establishment of the St Joseph Sodality in Lesotho was significantly influenced by Ms Mammuso Elizabeth Makoa from the Diocese of Witbank, who encouraged founder Mr Bokang Nicholas Tsoanamatsie to start the Sodality in Lesotho.
Mr Tsoanamatsie met with the Late President Maduduza Gabriel Zwane from the Diocese of Manzini and President Tsholo Tsholo from the Diocese of Klerksdorp and with Bishop Victor Phalana of Klerksdorp, who expressed his approval of this initiative and endorsed it by appointing the Late Fr Adrian Lelimo, a priest from Lesotho serving in the Diocese of Klerksdorp, as the Spiritual Director of the Sodality.
Regrettably, Fr Lelimo has since passed away; however, Bishop Phalana continues to support the initiative in Lesotho. “I always pray for you,” Bishop Phalana reassured Mr Tsoanamatsie.
Currently, the Spiritual Director of the sodality is Fr Benedict Mosiuoa Makhata CSS. The motto of the Sodality in Lesotho is “In St. Joseph, we prepare Christian families for the Lord” and “Brothers: Service, Oneness, and Charity.”
