A Life of Faith in Action: Celebrating Mammuso Elizabeth Makoa

Mammuso Elizabeth Makoa

“Faith  without works is dead.” These words from Scripture find a living expression in the life of Mammuso Elizabeth Makoa, a daughter of Lesotho whose unwavering devotion to the Catholic faith has become a source of inspiration to believers across Southern Africa and beyond.

Born and raised in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho, at St Luke Parish in the diocese of Leribe, Elizabeth Makoa carried with her the rich spiritual heritage of her homeland when she later settled in South Africa. While many people relocate in pursuit of new opportunities, Elizabeth also carried a greater mission—to serve Christ and His Church with all her heart.

For many years,  she has become widely respected as an organiser of Catholic pilgrimages,  helping countless faithful journey to holy places where they deepen their relationship with God. Through her dedication, pilgrims have not only travelled to sacred destinations but have also experienced profound spiritual renewal, strengthened faith, and lasting friendships rooted in Christ.

Elizabeth’s love for the Catholic Church extends far beyond organising pilgrimages.  She is a passionate defender and promoter of Catholic liturgy, always encouraging the faithful to appreciate the richness, beauty, and sacredness of the Church’s traditions. Her knowledge of Catholic worship, combined with her humility and reverence, has helped many  Catholics rediscover the meaning and dignity of the Holy Mass and the sacramental life of the Church.

In an age where technology often distracts people from prayer, Elizabeth has transformed digital platforms into places of evangelisation. She generously dedicates her time to leading prayer sessions, organising online retreats, and facilitating spiritual reflections that bring together participants from different countries and cultures. What began as virtual gatherings has grown into an international community of believers united in prayer, worship, and the love of God.

Her ministry demonstrates that evangelisation knows no borders. Through a simple internet connection, hearts have been touched, lives transformed,  and countless people encouraged to remain steadfast in their Catholic faith.

What distinguishes  Elizabeth even further is her willingness to personally invest in the mission of the Church. She has truly “put her money where her mouth is.”  Rather than merely encouraging others to support Church activities, she has generously contributed her own resources to ensure that retreats,  pilgrimages, prayer initiatives, and other apostolic works continue to flourish. Her generosity reflects the Gospel principle of giving not only from abundance but from a heart overflowing with love for Christ.

Those who know Elizabeth often describe her as compassionate, approachable,  prayerful, and deeply committed to serving others. She leads not through recognition or applause but through quiet acts of sacrifice and consistent service. Her greatest reward has never been public acclaim but witnessing souls grow closer to God.

Her life reminds us that holiness is found in ordinary people who faithfully answer God’s call every day. Whether organising pilgrimages,  teaching the beauty of Catholic liturgy, praying with believers online,  or quietly supporting the Church through her generosity, Elizabeth has become an instrument through which God continues to bless His people.

As we pay tribute to Mammuso Elizabeth Makoa, we do so with profound gratitude for her unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church. Her witness challenges all of us to become more generous with our time, our talents, and our resources in the service of God’s Kingdom.

May the Lord continue to bless her with strength, wisdom, and good health as she carries on her mission of evangelisation. May Our Lady, whom she faithfully honours, continue to intercede for her, and may her example inspire future generations to live their Catholic faith with courage,  humility, and joyful dedication.

Thank you, Mammuso Elizabeth Makoa, for reminding us that authentic faith is not merely professed—it is lived.
