A newly installed mosaic of Blessed Benedict Tshimangadzo Daswa, South Africa’s first Catholic martyr, was unveiled and blessed at the Church of the Beatitudes in Zwavelpoort on Saturday, 30 May 2026, during a pilgrimage of the Eastern Deanery of the Archdiocese of Pretoria.

The blessing was performed by Archbishop Anthony Dabula Mpako of Pretoria and Auxiliary Bishop John Masilo Selemela in the presence of clergy, religious and dozens of faithful gathered for the occasion.

Created by renowned South African mosaic artist Vera Valli Giovitto, founder of Mosaic Arts in Pretoria, the artwork captures the enduring witness of Blessed Daswa, whose courageous commitment to the Catholic faith continues to inspire believers across the country.

The mosaic incorporates symbols drawn from Blessed Daswa’s life and Venda heritage. The ball represents his love of football and dedication to youth, the maize symbolises his rural roots and love of farming, while the kettle reflects his renowned hospitality and spirit of welcome.
