14-October-to-20-October-1996Women pledge support across the Atlantic – 1996

African and African-American women who met for three days of talks in Johannesburg pledged to maintain the bonds they had formed and to continue working together. Nearly 40 African-American Catholic women and 70 from African countries met in the city as part of an October 3-14 trip. Beverly Carroll, executive director of the United States Bishops’ Secretariat for African-American Catholics, stated that the group had come to South Africa to see for themselves how the transition to democracy was working, and also says that they are determined to maintain links and do what they can to help with projects sponsored by the SACC.

13-October-to-19-October-1949Films getting worse – 1949

The moral qualities of the post-war motion pictures have hit an all-time low, Fr Patrick J Masterson, Executive of the National Legion of Decency, told the triennial convention of the International Federation of Catholic Alumnae in Chicago. He goes on to state that the influx of foreign films – 42 percent of the films which were found objectionable between November 1947-48, and 52 percent from November 1948 onwards – is partially to blame for the situation, but stresses that the morality of the domestic motion picture is also deteriorating.
