By Bonginkosi Mthembu and Melese Shula – The Catholic Health Care Association of Southern Africa (CATHCA) is offering free medical screenings at five parishes in a pilot project.
The checks, over the next two months, will be for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and also conditions such as cataracts, among others.
The number of deaths from NCDs has been rising globally, and they are among the leading causes of death in South Africa.
The screening project was initiated by Cathca, in partnership with Pretoria archdiocese, in 2017.
Albina Kekana, a retired nurse, is the coordinator. Medical doctors and nurses, with trained volunteers, will conduct the screenings for NCDs.
The five pilot parishes are Good Shepherd (Meerhof), Sacred Heart (Diepsloot), St John the Baptist (Pretoria North), St Camillus and Ga-Ramotse (Hammanskraal).
