The Power of Words

By Sr Maria Kampila SU – We all ought to be conscious of the words we utter and use daily.

Words are not simply sounds caused by air passing through our larynx, words have real power. God spoke the world into being by the power of His Word.

Words do more than just convey information. Words have the power to destroy or build, hate or love or create violence or peace.

The Bible says, “…the tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21. The power to use words is a unique and powerful gift from God.

A story is told of an 11-year-old boy who committed suicide on his mother’s birthday as a present to her. He left a letter saying, “On this special day l want you to be the happiest person ever. Every day you used to say that happiness left your life the day l was born. You told me that Dad left because of me, so today l want to change things. I want you to be very happy and live as if l never existed. You told me you would never look at me with love but l always loved you and admired you as the best mom on earth. I hope one day you will think of me. I hope in heaven you will be able to embrace and kiss me. The best gift l could give you is leaving your life as you have always told me you wished l was never born. I love you, mom, Happy Birthday”

This story teaches us that words cut deep and we should be careful of what we say to each and every being we meet and interact with. Words do not only exacerbate wounds but they directly inflict them.

The words we utter even to ourselves must be positive. Remember not to mix your words with your mood, you can change your mood but you can’t take back your words.

Kind words do not cost much, yet they accomplish much. Do not forget that words before spoken, are under our total control but after we speak them, we fall under their control. So, we need to choose our words well.
