Book on Paddy Kearney to be launched
A book chronicling the life and work of the late activist Paddy Kearney by Dr Raymond Perrier, director of the Denis Hurley Centre and monthly Southern Cross columnist, will be launched on Saturday, August 31 at the 1860 Heritage Centre in Durban.
Today, August 28, would have been the 82nd birthday of Kearney, the founder of the Diakonia Council of Churches and of the Denis Hurley Centre (DHC). “It’s an auspicious time to be launching a book about his life and immense contribution in the field of social justice,” Perrier said.
Having produced a 240,000 word PhD thesis about Kearney, Perrier is about to publish his shorter book version, with a foreword by former government minister Pravin Gordhan.
The book, titled Paddy Kearney – A Prophet for our Times, is over 320 pages in length and includes historic photographs as well as links to additional on-line material.
The first chance to buy will be as part of the Annual Paddy Kearney Lecture, organised jointly by the DHC with the Gandhi Development Trust, Active Citizens Movement and DUT. Held at the 1860 Heritage Centre at 11am on August 31, the lecturer will be delivered by Judge Chris Nicholson, who was part of the legal team that defended Kearney when he was detained without trial in 1985.
“Paddy’s award-winning book about Archbishop Denis Hurley was called The Guardian of the Light. I would tease him that that made him the ‘Guardian of the Guardian of the Light’. So I guess that now makes me the Guardian of the Guardian of the Guardian of the Light,” Perrier joked.
The book can be bought at the launch or ordered now at the special price of R256 from www.madeindurban.co.za/. In due course the book will also be available in select bookshops and for sale overseas.
