Article and pics by Bokang Tsoanamatsie – St Augustine Major Seminary in Roma in Lesotho commemorated a century since its establishment by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The Seminary began as a local establishment but ultimately expanded to serve students from across the Southern African region and various other countries in Africa.
Among the individuals who trained at this Seminary, we remember the late Sebastian Cardinal Khoarai OMI,as well as the archbishops of Pretoria, Johannesburg, and the Bishop of Aliwal North in South Africa, and several other bishops of Lesotho, among others. Fr Paul Lekena presently holds the position of Rector of the Seminary. The event, held on November 23, was honoured by the presence of His Majesty King Letsie III of Lesotho, his wife Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso and the Apostolic Nuncio of Southern Africa, His Excellency Henryk Jagodziński, along with several other distinguished guests.
The event also commemorated the ordination of seven priests: four from the Archdiocese of Maseru, two from the Diocese of Mohale’s Hoek, and one from the Diocese of Qacha’s Nek. The Seminary also presented several awards of excellence across various categories, recognising outstanding contributions within the Church in Lesotho and honouring its alumni. The awards were designated for:
– Priests commemorating their jubilees in priestly or religious life this year.
– Religious nuns celebrating their Religious Life Jubilee.
– Former commissioners of Police.
– Individuals who served in the National Security Services and the Lesotho Defence Force.
– Laypeople aged 70 and above who have selflessly dedicated their service to the Church.
These awards were conferred by His Excellency Henryk Jagodziński, the Apostolic Nuncio. Fr. Augustine Mahase Khakhane OMI served as the chairperson of the organising committee, which comprised religious members, alumni, and laypersons. Gratitude is extended to all who contributed to the success of this day, and special thanks are given to His Excellency, the Bishop of Leribe, Augustine Bane OMI, for presiding over a magnificent ordination Mass.
