By Bokang Tsoanamatsie – Archbishop Emeritus Zacarias Kamwenho, the sole surviving founder of  IMBISA, was present at the Mavuso Trade Centre in Manzini diocese to witness the legacy he established 50 years ago.

Archbishop  Emeritus Kamwenho stated that he was ordained as the auxiliary Bishop of  Lubango on November 23, 1974, just five months prior to the inception of IMBISA.

Archbishop Emeritus Zacarias Kamwenho referenced words from the book  of the Prophet Haggai: “Who among you is left who saw this house in its  former glory?” He affirmed that he is the only individual who has witnessed this “house” (IMBISA) in its former glory, as one of its founding members. He recalled the initial stages of IMBISA,  the sacred liturgy, and the joy experienced by the church in Southern  Africa.

Archbishop Emeritus expressed that he was part of the team that designed the colours of IMBISA to symbolise the church of Christ in  Southern Africa. He stated that, as Jesus proclaimed, he is the way, and he is journeying alongside the Bishops of IMBISA. He concluded by wishing IMBISA a long life.

Archbishop  Emeritus Zacarias Kamwenho was born on September 5, 1934, in Chimbundo,  Huambo, Angola. He is well-known for his role as a peace activist in  Angola and has played a crucial part in the peace process that concluded the Angolan civil war in 2002. Archbishop Emeritus Kamwenho was ordained as a Priest in 1961, became the Auxiliary Bishop of Lubango in  1974, and later served as the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Lubango.  He was consecrated by His Excellency Bishop Americo Henriques of Nova  Lisbon. He retired as the Archbishop of Lubango on September 5, 2009, at the age of 75. He has served as a Priest for 64 years and as a Bishop for 51 years.

Archbishop Emeritus Zacarias Kamwenho was honoured by the IMBISA Bishops with an award for his service.
