Do We Understand the Role Joseph Played in the Early Life of Jesus?

Joseph and JesusBy James Katende – Joseph—the earthly father of Jesus—is often overlooked in the nativity story, yet his role was both profound and prophetic. Chosen by God not because of power, but because of purity, Joseph’s quiet obedience speaks volumes to us today.

When Joseph discovered Mary was pregnant, he could’ve walked away. He could’ve chosen pride over purpose. But instead, he chose mercy. Even before the angel spoke to him, Joseph planned to protect Mary’s dignity. That’s the kind of man God entrusted to raise His Son—one of integrity, compassion, and unwavering obedience.

When the angel appeared in a dream and said, “Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife,” Joseph obeyed without hesitation. He didn’t understand everything—but he trusted the One who did. His obedience didn’t bring ease. It brought challenges. From travelling to Bethlehem to fleeing to Egypt to protect baby Jesus, Joseph walked a hard road. But through it all, he remained faithful.

As a carpenter, Joseph likely taught Jesus how to work with His hands. But more than that, he taught Him how to walk in humility, how to honour, how to listen, how to trust. God placed His Son in a home where faith was modelled, not just mentioned.

Joseph reminds us that greatness often looks like faithfulness. That quiet obedience can change history. He may not have spoken a single word recorded in Scripture, but his life spoke of surrender, sacrifice, and strength.

In a world chasing the spotlight, Joseph chose to surrender. And through that surrender, he helped raise the Light of the world.
