Mrs Fikile Mlotshwa Remembered as a Pillar of Regina Mundi Church and Women’s Rights.
The Catholic community of Regina Mundi Church in Soweto, Gauteng and the broader South African society are mourning the passing of Mrs Fikile Mlotshwa, a long-time parishioner of Regina Mundi Church, devoted member of the St Anne Sodality, and respected champion of women’s rights in South Africa.
Mrs Mlotshwa was widely known within the Regina Mundi Church parish for her unwavering faith, deep commitment to the Church, and service to the people of Soweto. For decades, she remained an active and faithful presence in parish life, where many regarded her as a mother figure, mentor and community organiser whose dedication touched generations of Catholics.
Beyond her involvement in the Church, Mrs Mlotshwa was also recognised as a stalwart of women’s rights and social justice in South Africa. Her life reflected a strong commitment to dignity, compassion and service, values that shaped both her public work and her family life.
She was the beloved mother of Thandi Mlotshwa and Fr Zwelinjani “Zweli” Mlotshwa OMI, Provincial Superior of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) in Southern Africa. Her influence on her children, family and wider community was evident in the lives of those she nurtured and inspired through her faith and leadership.
Mrs Mlotshwa was previously featured in a November 2022 article on Regina Mundi Church published in The Southern Cross Magazine, where her lifelong connection to the historic parish and the Soweto community was highlighted.

In a social media tribute to her, Fr Lawrence Mduduzi Ndlovu said:
“A quintessentially Sowetan woman. She was so many things bundled up in one; activist, organiser, leader, devout Catholic and above all else she was our Mother. In many ways she was the heartbeat of Regina Mundi parish while also being (herself) – Regina Sowetensis. I remember seeing this picture (above) of her in a museum in Europe and marvelling at it being there. It was captured while she was doing her work as a Comforter in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) at Regina Mundi Church in the mid-1990s.”
