Oblate bishops in Rome gather for the Oblate Immaculate Bishops Conference in Rome

Oblate bishops from around the world are participating in the Oblate Immaculate Bishops Conference, which is being held at the Oblates General House in Rome from 18-21 May.

The conference commemorates the bicentenary of the papal approval of the Constitutions and Rules.  The General House is hosting over 20 Oblate Bishops from various countries, showcasing the truly international nature of the  Congregation. Participants hail from a wide array of nations, including  Australia, Bangladesh, Peru, Lesotho, Namibia, Paraguay, South Africa, Ukraine, Zambia, Madagascar, the Philippines, and Canada, as well as representatives from the Apostolic Vicariate of Pilcomayo and the  Diocese of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada. This extensive representation underscores the global scope of the Oblate mission and the diversity of its cultural and pastoral settings.

The programme on Monday, the 18th of May, featured two notable presentations.  The first, entitled “Eugene de Mazenod: Bishop and Founder,” was presented by Fr Frank Santucci, the Superior of the General House. The second presentation, delivered by Bishop Neil Frank of the Diocese of  Mariannhill in South Africa, centred on Oblate Bishops and the Oblate charism. Following each presentation, the bishops convened in small round-table discussions to promote dialogue, fraternity, and collective reflection.

This ongoing assembly offers participants a chance to enhance their communion, share pastoral experiences, and reaffirm their dedication to the Church’s mission, inspired by the charism of St Eugene de Mazenod.

The Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference is represented by Archbishop Buti Joseph Tlhagale, Archbishop Emeritus of Johannesburg and Bishop Sylvester David, auxiliary of Cape Town and Bishop Neil Frank. The Lesotho  Catholic Bishops Conference is represented by four  Oblate Bishops: Archbishop Tlali Gerard Lerotholi, Bishop Joseph Mopeli Sephamola, who also serves as the president of the Lesotho episcopal conference, and Bishop Sekhonyana Vitalis Marole of Leribe, along with the Bishop Emeritus of Leribe, Augustine Tumahole Bane.

We pray for OMI Bishops for a blessed conference and travel mercies back home.
