By Thoko Malinga, St Benedict Catholic Church – The Franciscans and Sacristans of St Benedict Catholic Church in Zone 3, Sebokeng, hosted a youth event under the inspiring theme, “Young in Spirit, Strong in Faith, Building a Better Tomorrow” on Saturday, 13 June 2026. The event brought together young people, religious sisters, clergy, professionals, and community leaders for a day of prayer, learning, reflection, and empowerment. The event formed part of the celebrations marking the Jubilee Year of St Francis and was also in loving memory of Naledi Motsapi, a parishioner of St Benedict and one of the young people who tragically lost her life in a scholar transport accident earlier this year. Her memory served as a reminder of the importance of nurturing and supporting young people as they journey through life.
The day began with the celebration of Holy Mass, presided over by the parish priest, Fr Sandile Ma- dotyeni, placing Christ at the centre of all that was to follow. The Eucharistic celebration reminded the youth that true leadership, service, and success are rooted in a living relationship with God and a commitment to Christian values. A significant part of the programme focused on the Franciscan charism and spirituality. Fr Patrick, a Franciscan priest and Chaplain for the Youth in the Vaal Deanery, together with Sr Clare and Sr Mary-Jones, led insightful sessions on Franciscan saints and spirituality. Through reflection, discussion, and shared experiences, the youth deepened their understanding of the life and teachings of St Francis of Assisi. Participants were challenged to embrace Franciscan values such as simplicity, humility, peace, compassion, and care for creation in their daily lives.

The programme also addressed important social challenges affecting young people today. Topics such as substance abuse and teenage pregnancy were presented by various speakers who encouraged honest conversations, responsible decision-making, self-respect, and the importance of seeking guidance and support when faced with life’s challenges.
Following a lively lunch and entertainment programme, the focus shifted to career guidance and personal development. The youth had the privilege of engaging with a diverse panel of professionals who shared their educational journeys, career experiences, and valuable life lessons.
Among the speakers were Mr Pheko Mofokeng from Phaphang Environment Organisation, Ms Hloni Mthimkhulu, eTV Journalist, Mr Tiisetso Nhlapo, Motivational Speaker and Builder and other professionals and community leaders. Through their presentations, the speakers encouraged young people to pursue education, remain disciplined, work diligently, and never allow their circumstances to limit their aspirations. The interactive discussions provided participants with an op- portunity to ask questions and gain practical insights into various career paths and opportunities.
The day concluded on a high note with an inspiring session led by Councillor Mpilo Kunene, Junior Deputy Speaker of the City of Johannesburg Student Council. He challenged the youth to think critically, work collaboratively, and recognise the leadership potential within themselves. He encouraged them not to allow their backgrounds or current circumstances to decide their future. Through engaging activities and meaningful discussions, he reminded them that leadership begins with service, responsibility, integrity, and the courage to make a positive difference in their communities.
The Franciscan Youth Event 2026 was more than just a gathering; it was a meaningful investment in the spiritual, personal, and professional development of our young people. It created a safe and nurturing environment where faith and practical life skills came together, equipping participants to face the future with confidence, purpose, and hope.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all the speakers, facilitators, clergy, religious sisters, volunteers, sponsors, and organisers whose generosity of time, expertise, and support made the event possible. Special appreciation to all the young people who took part with enthusiasm, openness, and a willingness to learn throughout the day.
As we continue our journey of faith together, may the words of St Francis of Assisi continue to inspire our youth: “Start by doing what is necessary; then do what is possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” May our young people remain rooted in faith, united in purpose, and committed to building a better tomorrow for the Church, their communities, and society at large.
