By Mxolisi Mashifane OP – The Transfiguration chapel at the Dominican priory of Emaphethelweni, KwaZulu-Natal, was filled to capacity with the faithful, members of the ACTS UKZN Pietermaritzburg branch, the Dominican Sisters of Montebello, the Dominican Sisters of Newcastle, and the Dominican Sisters of Oakford, alongside various religious congregations that included both Franciscan and Dominican Friars to celebrate the Feast of St Dominic on August 8.
In keeping with an eight-century-old tradition shared by both orders, Franciscan Friar Bill William Lovett, guardian of the Hilton friary, served as the main celebrant and preached the homily. Concelebrants included Frs Mike Deeb OP (prior of Emaphethelweni), Joseph Maku MCCJ, Vincent OFMCap, Barnabas Simatende OMI and Paul Decock OMI
Coinciding with the solemnity, student friars Mxolisi Mashifane OP and Prince Ncube OP renewed their religious vows.
The liturgical music was animated by the melodious voices of the Dominican Sisters of Montebello.
After Mass, Sr Valentine Dladla OP, coordinator of the Dominican Sisters Africa Southern Zone, delivered a brief talk explaining the ongoing work of the Dominican Sisters across Africa and within the Southern Zone.
