A fire, apparently the result of arson, damaged the Marian grotto at St Wendelin’s parish in the diocese of Mariannhill, outside Durban, on Monday afternoon.
The attacker also smashed a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The raging fire threatened to burn down the parish house and adjacent primary school. Firefighters from Pinetown South Fire Station extinguished the fire. A suspected arsonist was apprehended and identified as a local person with psychiatric problems.
