Rob and Mahadi Buthelezi: Championing Love, Family, and Youth
In the heart of Soweto, where history, culture, and faith intertwine, the remarkable love story of Rob and Mahadi Buthelezi serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for youth and all who celebrate the joy of marriage.
Hailing from this vibrant township, this dynamic couple has not only crafted a life together but has also dedicated themselves to fortifying families within their community and embracing the beautiful path of marriage as described by Pope Francis in his apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia.
Their journey ignited within the hallowed walls of the Catholic Church, specifically at Our Lady of Fatima in Dube. It was here that destiny intertwined their paths, guided by a divine force that would lead them to become champions of love and supporters of families in need of guidance and care.
Mahadi Buthelezi was the cover star of The Southern Cross in February 2022.
Reflecting on those initial days, the couple warmly remembers their parish priest, Fr Buti Tlhagale OMI, now archbishop of Johannesburg. Their story further connects to their own familial roots within the Church. Rob’s upbringing in a devout Catholic family granted him a deep appreciation for faith and community, and his uncle, Archbishop Peter Butelezi, etched his name in history as the first black South African archbishop in 1978.
The roots of their relationship run deep in faith and education. Rob and Mahadi honed their intellect and commitment to their faith at St Benedict’s College and Holy Rosary Convent in Johannesburg. This common foundation paved the way for a marriage that beautifully exemplifies love, partnership, and service — attributes Pope Francis passionately discusses in Amoris Laetitia.
In 1994, during the Catholic Year of the Family, Rob and Mahadi united in a ceremony that embodied their values and commitment to each other. Archbishop Butelezi officiated the union, marking a profoundly significant moment for the couple and their families.
In 2000, they ventured into a new chapter by establishing a property group, a business with a mission to provide affordable housing for the less fortunate. This enterprise embodied their principles of compassion and empowerment, creating a tangible impact in numerous lives.
Their influence extended further when they were called to serve in the parish of the Resurrection in Bryanston, Johannesburg. Tasked with leading the family life desk, Rob and Mahadi utilised their experiences and wisdom to guide over 400 couples through pre-marriage courses.
Subsequently, they were entrusted with the leadership of the Family Life Desk for the archdiocese of Johannesburg. Their responsibilities broadened as they became integral members of the working group for the South African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) Department of Laity, Formation, and Family Life. Their insights and passion shaped policies and initiatives that fostered stronger families within the Church and society — themes that resonate in the teachings of Pope Francis.
Their marriage seminars and retreats continue to provide guidance and support for couples seeking to strengthen their bonds. Beyond the Church, Mahadi’s influence extends to the South African Council of Churches (SACC) Women’s Forum, where she addresses critical issues related to women and family life — a demonstration of her devotion to Pope Francis’s ideals.
This couple has been blessed with four children: two boys and two girls, a testament to the love and joy that they nurture within their own family. Their journey is a testament to the transformative power of faith, love, and dedication to one another.
In the words of Pope Francis: “Love always has an aspect of deep compassion that leads to accepting the other person as part of this world, even when he or she acts differently than I would like.” Through their actions and devotion, Rob and Mahadi Buthelezi seek to embody this compassionate love, serving as an enduring source of inspiration for generations to come.
