St Francis of Assisi Parish: Eating with Christ at Passover Meal

On Wednesday of Holy Week, St Francis of Assisi parish in Vanderbijlpark went back 2000 years and celebrated a historic Jewish Passover meal with over one hundred participants attending from various churches. The parish priest Fr Nkosinathi Njoko OFM, who portrayed a Jewish father fielding questions from young family members on the meaning of the Exodus, led the paschal event.

The celebration, the second in recent years in the Vaal Triangle, was held at Dominican Sancta Maria Junior School near Vaal Mall. Intimations of Christ’s Last Supper, appropriate choir singing, tasting Passover ritual foods and readings in five languages from the Bible enriched and explained the solemn occasion.

“This was awesome!” many remarked afterwards. And if that wasn’t enough, a modern joyful meal followed to bring us back into the twenty-first century.
